Around the town of Banff, there are a number of hikes that are great for any skill and fitness level. If mom is someone who enjoys spending time adventuring outdoors and experiencing beautiful Rocky Mountain views, these hikes are for her:
Just a stone’s throw away from Buffalo Mountain Lodge, this switch-back trail gives hikers the ability to climb to the summit of Tunnel Mountain in the heart of Banff. Less daunting than other the surrounding peaks, Tunnel Mountain provides breathtaking views of the Bow Valley and area. Don’t forget your good hiking shoes and lots of water before embarking on this hike!
The popular Fenland Trail is approximately 1.4 kilometres from the Banff town centre, and allows hikers to travel a peaceful interpretive trail under a canopy of old-growth spruce trees. The pleasant woodland loop totals 2.1 km, taking approximately one hour from start to finish. An interpretive trail guide panel is available at the trailhead parking lot that outlines information about the trail to interested hikers. The trail is also a perfect place to spot wildlife year round.
Close to the Banff town site, the Bow River/Hoodoos hike is popular with tourists and locals alike. The trail descends to the river and follows it east and north under the cliff face of Tunnel Mountain before climbing the mountain’s north-east shoulder and coming out on Tunnel Mountain Road. As you climb from the river’s edge, you will reach the Hoodoos viewing point – a great spot to take photos, or just to enjoy the incredible scenery. The Bow River/Hoodoos hike is approximately 4.2 km one way and usually takes just over three hours from start to finish.
Whether you’re looking to help mom unwind after a day of hiking, or are simply treating her to a day of pampering, Banff is a great place to indulge in a spa day.
